Flying to Palma (PMI): Direct routes and key airlines from Spain, the UK and Germany
Elisabeth Blue - 9/28/26

Palma de Mallorca Airport (IATA code: PMI), also known as Son Sant Joan International Airport, is the main gateway to the island and one of the busiest aviation hubs in the Mediterranean. During the summer season, the facility connects the Balearic archipelago with more than 160 international destinations through a dense network of scheduled flights, holiday charters and low-cost connections.

At Hotels VIVA, we know that the logistics of a family, sporting or restful holiday begin the moment you choose your flight itinerary. Selecting the ideal combination of departure airport, operator type and arrival time slot is decisive for speeding up check-in, handling large-format luggage —such as road bikes or golf bags— and minimising road transit time to our resorts in the north (Bay of Alcúdia and Playa de Muro) and the eastern coast of Mallorca (Cala Mesquida).

The aim of this technical guide is to analyse the direct air connectivity with Palma de Mallorca from the three main European source markets (mainland Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany), breaking down the operating airlines, the frequencies by IATA season and the logistical keys to linking your arrival at the terminal with our establishments.

1. Connections by source country

2. Domestic market (Spain): the mainland connection artery

The air connectivity between the Iberian Peninsula and Palma de Mallorca Airport is characterised by a steady offering across all twelve months of the year, which intensifies considerably during the IATA summer season (from late March to late October).

The high-frequency air bridge: Madrid and Barcelona

The two great mainland metropolises act as continuous feeders of travellers towards the island, offering schedules suited to both short weekend getaways and extended holiday stays:

  • Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) – Palma (PMI): With an average flight time of barely 45 minutes, this is the shortest air route with the highest density of frequencies from Spain to the Balearics. Operated continuously by Vueling (which uses PMI as a secondary operating base), Air Europa and Ryanair, it offers almost hourly departures from early morning (06:00) until late at night (22:30).
  • Madrid-Barajas (MAD) – Palma (PMI): With a flight time of approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, this route is covered mainly by Iberia Express (Iberia's short- and medium-haul subsidiary), Air Europa (whose corporate base is in Mallorca) and Ryanair. Iberia Express stands out for offering a fare that includes a smooth connection from intercontinental flights and high punctual regularity at T4.

Regional connections from the North, East and South

The decentralisation of mainland routes means you can fly to Palma without any intermediate stops from the main regional capitals:

  • Northern Spain: Vueling and Ryanair maintain direct connections from Bilbao (BIO), Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) and Asturias (OVD). The Bilbao-Palma route (1h 15 min) is especially in demand during the mid-season among cyclists and hikers.
  • Valencian Community and Murcia: Valencia (VLC) and Alicante (ALC) have daily air hops of 45 to 50 minutes operated by Vueling, Air Nostrum (Iberia's regional franchise with turboprop aircraft or regional jets) and Ryanair.
  • Andalusia: Seville (SVQ) and Málaga (AGP) have daily direct flights operated by Vueling and Ryanair, with a journey time of 1 hour and 15 minutes, easing holiday traffic from the south towards the north of Mallorca.

3. UK market: coverage from the British Isles

The British market is one of the historic pillars of tourism in the Bay of Alcúdia and Playa de Muro. The network of air connections between the United Kingdom and Palma de Mallorca is one of the most extensive on the European continent, connecting not only London's major metropolitan hubs but a dozen regional airports as well.

The London metropolitan area (London hubs)

London has a diversified offering that spreads air traffic across five airports of origin towards the PMI terminal:

  • London Gatwick (LGW) and London Luton (LTN): EasyJet dominates the market share at these two airports, offering multiple daily frequencies with a flexible pricing policy and hold-luggage check-in options tailored to families.
  • London Stansted (STN): This is Ryanair's main operating base in the United Kingdom for flights to Mallorca, as well as a key hub for Jet2.com, which operates charter and scheduled flights aimed at holiday tourism.
  • London Heathrow (LHR) and London City (LCY): British Airways operates daily connections from the global hub of Heathrow and executive or premium flights from London City (LCY) with its subsidiary BA CityFlyer, offering full onboard service and a standard baggage allowance included in selected fares.

The Midlands, the North of England and Scotland

Connectivity outside the British capital is highly consolidated, sparing families in the central and northern regions from having to travel to the London airports:

  • Manchester (MAN) and Birmingham (BHX): These are the two British regional nodes with the largest number of scheduled seats towards PMI. Jet2.com and EasyJet operate daily routes during the tourist season. Jet2.com stands out in this segment for its focus on the family customer, offering a standard checked-baggage allowance of 22 kg per passenger and simplified processes for checking in prams and sports equipment.
  • Leeds Bradford (LBA), Newcastle (NCL) and East Midlands (EMA): Covered almost exclusively by Jet2.com and Ryanair, they guarantee direct connectivity from the North of England to Palma on flights of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.
  • Scotland and Northern Ireland: Edinburgh (EDI) and Glasgow (GLA) have regular direct connections with EasyJet and Jet2.com (flight time: 2h 45 min), while Belfast International (BFS) connects the province of Northern Ireland during the spring and summer months.

4. German market (DACH): the German-Mallorcan air bridge

The aviation relationship between Germany and Palma de Mallorca Airport is of such operational magnitude that the route is often informally called "the northern air bridge" within the aviation sector. Mallorca is connected with practically all of Germany's commercial airports, guaranteeing daily flights even in the winter months.

The major network hubs: Frankfurt and Munich

The two German intercontinental airports guarantee the feed of long-haul passengers and of the business or high-end tourism traveller:

  • Frankfurt am Main (FRA): Operated by the flag carrier Lufthansa and by the leisure-flight specialist Condor. Lufthansa maintains daily flights all year round, operating in high season with wide-body aircraft (such as the Airbus A330 or A340) on selected dates to absorb the demand peaks of the Easter and summer holidays.
  • Munich (MUC): Covered by Lufthansa and Eurowings, it offers daily direct connections from southern Germany with a journey time of 2 hours.

The dominance of Eurowings and the regional airports

Eurowings, the Lufthansa Group's low-cost and leisure subsidiary, uses Palma de Mallorca Airport as one of its most important international operating bases. Its route network connects PMI directly with:

  • Düsseldorf (DUS): The DUS-PMI route is one of the busiest in Europe by passenger volume. Eurowings operates multiple daily frequencies, joined by flights from Condor and TUI fly.
  • Berlin-Brandenburg (BER), Hamburg (HAM), Stuttgart (STR) and Cologne/Bonn (CGN): All these cities have daily non-stop links with Eurowings and Ryanair.
  • Medium-sized airports (Paderborn, Münster/Osnabrück, Nuremberg, Leipzig): Charter and leisure airlines such as Sundair, Freebird Airlines Europe and Condor ensure that travellers from rural regions or secondary German cities can fly directly to Mallorca without having to transfer in Frankfurt or Munich.

Special sports luggage on German airlines

A decisive factor for German tourists staying in areas such as Playa de Muro or the Bay of Alcúdia is the transport of sports luggage. Condor, Eurowings and TUI fly all have standardised protocols for pre-booking hold space online for road bikes and golf bags. This service is critical for the thousands of cyclists who come to our specialist hotels during the spring (February to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons.

5. From Son Sant Joan (PMI) to the VIVA Hotels: arrival logistics

Reaching the Palma de Mallorca Airport terminal is only the first leg of the journey. The strategic location of our establishments in the north and east of the island allows for a smooth transfer by road along Mallorca's main dual-carriageway network.

The fast Ma-13 axis towards the North (Alcúdia and Playa de Muro)

For guests heading to our aparthotels and family or adults-only resorts in the north of the island, the drive is straight and quick. After leaving the PMI terminal, you take the Ma-19 dual carriageway towards Palma to connect immediately with the Ma-13 dual carriageway in the direction of Inca/Alcúdia.

  • Transfer time: Between 45 and 50 minutes in normal traffic conditions.
  • Reference destinations:
    • VIVA Sunrise: Located in Puerto de Alcúdia, just minutes from the end of the Ma-13 dual carriageway. Ideal for families seeking swift access from the airport with young children.
    • VIVA Eden Lago: Located next to Lago Esperanza in the Puerto de Alcúdia area, offering a direct route from the main road.
    • VIVA Blue & Spa: Strategically positioned in Playa de Muro, next to the S'Albufera Natural Park.
    • VIVA Golf Adults Only 18+: On the seafront of the Bay of Alcúdia, 45 minutes directly from the airport via the Ma-13.

VIVA Blue & Spa

Access to the East via the Ma-15 (Cala Mesquida)

For travellers whose destination is the natural tranquillity of eastern Mallorca, the route runs along the Ma-15 regional road, which crosses the centre of the island through Manacor and Artà until it reaches the municipality of Capdepera.

  • Transfer time: Approximately 55 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Reference destination:

VIVA Cala Mesquida Resort & Spa

Direct transfer services arranged with VIVA

To avoid the usual delays at the car hire offices in the terminal or the complexity of intercity public transport with suitcases and prams, you can book direct transfer services (private or shared) through the Hotels VIVA corporate website or via our customer service department. A driver meets your group in the PMI arrivals hall and carries out the door-to-door transfer directly to the reception of your chosen hotel.

6. Frequently asked questions about flights to Mallorca (FAQ)

How far in advance is it advisable to book flights to Mallorca to travel in July or August?

To fly during the busiest high-season months (July and August), the ideal time frame for booking flights at competitive fares on network airlines (Iberia Express, Lufthansa, British Airways) or low-cost carriers (EasyJet, Vueling, Ryanair) is between 3 and 5 months in advance (from February to April). Booking with less than 30 days' leeway in summer usually means fare increases of up to 60% in the most convenient morning and afternoon time slots.

Which airlines flying to Palma de Mallorca allow you to check in bike boxes or special sports luggage?

The vast majority of the operating airlines that connect with PMI have special-luggage options. Companies such as Condor, Eurowings, Lufthansa, Jet2.com, EasyJet and Iberia allow you to add sports luggage (bikes, golf equipment, kitesurf boards) during the online booking process. It's essential to book the bike space in advance, since the holds of Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 aircraft have a limited maximum quota per flight for these large-format items.

Are there direct air connections with Mallorca during the winter months (November to March)?

Yes. Although the purely charter airlines reduce their schedules in winter, Palma de Mallorca maintains permanent international connectivity. From Spain, the routes from Madrid (Iberia Express, Air Europa) and Barcelona (Vueling, Air Europa) keep multiple daily flights. From Germany, hubs such as Frankfurt (Lufthansa, Condor), Munich, Düsseldorf and Berlin (Eurowings) offer direct connections every day of the year. From the United Kingdom, airports such as London Gatwick, London Stansted and Manchester maintain regular operations during the winter months.
