Enjoy Mallorca’s best gastronomic tour
Elisabeth Blue - 7/11/19

Mallorca’s gastronomy is one of its strong points and can be enjoyed in many ways: from Michelin star restaurants to the most popular tours, but all equally exquisite. You can take a wander around many markets and street markets where you can taste or buy excellent artisan products.

What stands out about Mallorcan cuisine?

Although Mallorcan cuisine is predominantly associated with ensaimadas and sobrasada, both of which are truly delicious, there are actually many more culinary charms to be discovered.

Today, Mallorcan cuisine is a perfect combination of tradition, variety and modernity, based on local produce both from the sea and from the land. Mallorca is also known for its olive oil, wines (denomination of origin), arroz brut, coca de trampó, artisan cheese or Mallorcan tumbet. These are just a few examples.

Mallorcan gastronomic tours

To get an idea of the true value of Mallorcan cuisine, it’s a good idea to enjoy tours which are focused on its most authentic produce. These are some of the most essential:

  • Tapas tour. Wandering around the capital’s old town offers endless spots where you can taste typical Mallorcan dishes, as well as dishes from other cultures and cuisines. Maximum variety and delight are more than guaranteed. Some of the famous options include Can Frau in the Santa Catalina market, La Rosa in the city centre, El Tast and many more.
  • Olive oil tour. The olive tree is one of the Mediterranean’s most characteristic trees. In Mallorca, ‘pa amb oli’ (bread with olive oil, tomato and cured meats or cheeses) is sacred. These are simple, yet truly exquisite dishes. There’s an entire culture and cuisine based on the production and quality of the local olive oil. The Sóller and Deià areas in the heart of the Tramuntana mountain range stand out, with century-old olive trees providing some of the most prestigious oils, such as Son Moragues, Oli des Mirant and Son Mir.
  • Wine tour. Mallorca also stands out for its wines. One of the most important denominations of origin is Binissalem, with ancient origins (1st century, before Christ, following the Roman conquest) and a total of 16 wine cellars, many of which you can visit. Wine cellars including Son Puig offer tastings and visits where you can immerse yourself in Mallorca’s most profound tradition.
  • Traditional market tour. Another option is to explore the main markets and food fairs, in particular in Alcudia, Capdepera and Artá, where you can taste traditional produce and discover the production and age-old techniques.
  • Avant-garde cuisine tour. In the Calvià or Andrax areas you can find many quality restaurants which serve signature dishes based on tradition. Predi Son Jaumell Rural Hotel is home to chef Andreu Genestra’s Michelin star restaurant. Mallorca impresses with its numerous top-quality restaurants in proportion to its size.

However, there’s nothing more important than top quality cuisine at your hotel.
