The Santuari de Lluc, also known as the Santuari de Santa María de Lluc, is the first Marian Shrine in the Balearic Island, dating back to the 13^th century. Lluc is much more than just a monastery; it forms part of Mallorcan identity.

The festivities in honour of the Virgin of Lluc take place on 12^th September, with a procession of children carrying lanterns. Visitors dance and taste a large variety of local speciality cuisine.

The legend tells of a youngster called Lluc, around the year 1229, who found the statue of the Virgin in the Serra de Tramuntana. The young boy took the statue to the town priest, but the next day, the statue had disappeared from the church and appeared in the same place the boy had found it previously.

The inhabitants believed that this “miracle” could only mean that the virgin wished for a shrine to be built right in that spot, a shrine that would then be transformed into the Santuari de Lluc as we know it today.
