A very popular tourist activity in Mallorca is to take the Sóller train and then go for a boat trip around Sa Calobra and dive into one of its paradisiacal coves. This trip is ideal for those travelling as a family or those who want to get to know the island in a short time, as you can do it all in a day.

If you’re just going to spend a few days in Mallorca, then the Sóller train tour and the boat trip to Sa Calobra is something you just can't miss. Immerse yourself in the history of the island and visit some of its most emblematic spots by train!

The history of the Sóller train

In order to avoid being cut off from the other towns on the island, the town of Sóller created this train route. Ever since 1912, the Sóller train and its locomotives have been travelling along this route that starts in the city of Palma, passing through Bunyola, across the beautiful Serra de Tramuntana, and over the Cinc Ponts viaduct, until it reaches Sóller and its natural harbour. The route takes about an hour from the city of Palma, which is 23 kilometres from Sóller.

But what is there to see in Sóller? Once you reach the town of Sóller, you can take a trip to its small picturesque fishing port on other local transport. In Sóller, there’s also a historic tram that links the church of Sant Bartomeu with the Plaça de la Constitució.

Inaugurated in 1913, a year after the Sóller train route, the tram travels through the town to the port on a half-hour route, allowing you to take beautiful photos of the town on the shores of the Mediterranean and stroll through the old town, where there are restaurants selling fresh produce that comes directly from the port. The price of the Sóller train from Palma is 25 euros, and there’s a combined ticket with the tram that goes all the way to the port and along the coast for 32 euros.

A trip to Sa Calobra

After a ride on the Sóller train and the historic tram, you can change again and take a boat trip on the waters of Sa Calobra. On your excursion to Sa Calobra, we recommend that you also include a visit to the estuary of the Torrent de Pareis and its beautiful beach with crystal clear waters.

Just 60 minutes from the port of Sóller is the cove of Sa Calobra. Once you get there, just follow the signs on the paths to find more spectacular cliffs and beaches. You can also choose to have something to eat at one of the restaurants and food stalls.

Sa Calobra de Mallorca can be visited all year round, as long as the weather is good for sailing. You can also choose to buy tickets that combine the train, the tram, and the boat trip to the cove of Sa Calobra in Palma de Mallorca, but you can also book each activity separately. However, you really shouldn’t miss the boat trip to the cove of Sa Calobra, as it’s truly incredible.

Even if you’re travelling in a small boat, you can still enter the caves near the Torrent de Pareis or stop at another cove in the area, Cala Tuent, which has a natural charm that will take your breath away. Another ideal stop on the way to Sa Calobra is Sa Costera, an area with shallow waters that make it an excellent place for anchoring or diving, as it’s slightly sheltered from the wind.

We recommend that you take the first train and boat of the day to give you enough time to enjoy everything there is to see. The last train back to Palma de Mallorca leaves at 18.30. The boat trips tend to vary somewhat in their timetables, but they all include a return trip, and some of the larger boats have public toilets where you can get changed, as well as having drinks for sale on board.

A boat trip around Sóller and Sa Calobra on a Saturday could be the best option, as this is Sóller’s market day. However, it’s also one of the busiest days in Sa Calobra in Mallorca. On your next visit to Mallorca, the Sóller train route and the boat trip to Sa Calobra are two activities that you just mustn’t miss. Remember to leave a day free to enjoy them!
