Palma encanta: El Castillo de Bellver
admin - 2/22/16

We love Palma: Bellver Castle

Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands is a city that each year attracts thousands of enthusiastic tourists who leave captivated by each of the charming corners of this vibrant and cosmopolitan city.

We has the pleasure to born here and we can anticipate that a particular phenomenon takes place in Palma. It is one of the European cities that offers a perfect balance between culture, architecture, naturure and events or activities that made it become a meeting point for music, art, gastronomy, history o sports lovers.

Our beautiful capital make visitors foll in love with it and we will tell you one of the reasons why. Toz102day we want to stop at the Bellver Castle. This Gothic castle was built in the fifteenth century by King James II, who used it as a royal residence. And, like most things in Palma, the castle has a singularity: it is circular. There are just a few castles in Europe with this shape and only one in Spain: this one.

It is located just 3 km from the old town and 112 meters above thesea level. Surrounded by pine trees, it offers spectacular views of the city and the Bay of Palma, this is the reason why it was named 'bell veer', beautiful view in old Catalan.

This castle with three small towers and one tower divided into 4 floors also has a two floors courtyard and another circular courtyard built over a cistern. On the second floor there is a chapel that has become one of the favorite places for concerts and cultural events in recent years. But it was not always like this, it has been used as a royal residence, as a prison, a hub of the cultural heritage conservation movement or a factory of coins, among others. It was not until 1976 when it was restored and opened to the public, at the same time as the opening of  the Museum of History of Palma de Mallorca (inside the casltle) with an exclusive room dedicated to Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, one of the Bellver Castle prisoners.

This is one of our top recommendations due to its architecture and views. Do not miss it!
