Routes by car: discover the Serra de Tramuntana

Travelling by car through the Serra de Tramuntana also allows you to appreciate Mallorca’s beautiful surroundings. The winding roads along the Sa Calobra pass will take your breath away and allow you to stop and take in the scenery whenever you like. This is one of the greatest advantages of travelling by car through the Sierra Tramuntana - being able to stop as you please.

Along the way, you can also discover several of the villages nestled in the Tramuntana mountain range – you’ll fall in love with them! But be careful of the windy road! The Nus de Sa Corbat is a route that makes a complete 360-degree turn and is where most travellers decide to stop to drink in the incredible scenery from its viewpoint. From there, you can get a perfect view of the whole winding road devised by the engineer Antonio Peretti, who, in 1932, connected the inaccessible areas of Mallorca by means of this snake-like route, called the MA-2141.

This engineer was also responsible for creating the route that leads to Cape Formentor, another of the most-visited viewpoints in the Serra de Tramuntana. The beautiful views and the winding route end at a lighthouse, the Formentor lighthouse, which is a great vantage point for photos. From there, you can contemplate Mallorca’s nature in its purest form, with rocky cliffs and the turquoise blue of the water surrounding the backbone of the Serra de Tramuntana.

The best place to do hiking

The best way to appreciate nature in all its splendour in the Serra de Tramuntana is by hiking. Thanks to the different routes already mapped out for you, you’ll be able to discover the most remote and wildest parts of the island. Furthermore, Mallorca's rocky terrain makes it the ideal place for rock climbing and canyoning. You can find many companies that specialise in offering adventure sports and excursions to superb locations, such as Món d'Aventura or Rocksport Mallorca.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed and peaceful hiking experience in Tramuntana in Mallorca, and one that allows you to connect with nature from a more spiritual point of view, then why not try out the paths that take you to the monasteries of Mallorca? These retreats, or hideaways, which still serve as a home to several religious congregations, are located on the peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana, nestled in the heights. The Santuari de Lluc, which can be reached by the Ruta de Pedra en Sec, or the Sant Salvador sanctuary, located on the summit of the mountain of the same name, are two of the most recommended routes, as they only take a few hours to complete.

Continuing along the Ruta de Pedra en Sec, you can enjoy an eight-stage route that stretches from Andratx to Pollença, offering the unique opportunity to walk along the cobbled paths that linked the ancient villages of the Serra Tramuntana to each other. The GR221 route has its own website, from which you can download maps and routes for hiking in the Serra de Tramuntana.

Also worth a visit is Valldemossa, a village that was described by the pianist Chopin as the most beautiful place in the world. The pleasant village of Sóller is another ideal place to explore on foot, with a wealth of modernist and French buildings to delight the eye. We also recommend the village of Fornalutx, a place in the Tramuntana known as the prettiest village in Spain, with its quiet, narrow cobbled streets.
