With the arrival of April, and having negotiated the cold winter months, our bodies are starting to yearn for a break. That's why more and more people decide to travel at Easter, a time of the year when we can enjoy visiting places without the overcrowding of the summer months. You don't know what to do at Easter in Mallorca? Keep reading, because here at Hotels VIVA we’re going to give you some great tips!
Mallorca is an island that has so much to offer in spring, thanks to its mild temperatures (maximum temperatures of around 20 °C). You can hire a car to drive along the coast with the flowers in full bloom, take a stroll along the beaches, or go on cycling excursions.
On our list of things to do at Easter in Mallorca we couldn’t miss out the Holy Week processions, the most popular religious tradition on the island. In fact, in the city of Palma alone there are around fifty brotherhoods that, during these days, flood the streets of the old quarter with nazarenos and wooden crosses that move and sway to the sound of the beating drums and the cracking of whips.
The high point of these celebrations in the capital is the “procession of blood” on the evening of Maundy Thursday.
On Good Friday, in some villages we can see davallaments, re-enactments of Christ's descent from the Cross. The most famous one is in Pollença. This is a procession that ascends 365 steps in front of thousands of spectators. The steps are illuminated by oil lamps and it’s a night full of striking, mystical images.
If you’re wondering what to do during Easter Week in Mallorca, we suggest you join some of the typical Easter Sunday traditions that include meals in the countryside (the Sant Blai Hermitage, the Puig de Santa Magdalena in Inca, the Puig de Santa María in Pollença and the Santuario de Gracia in Llucmajor are some typical places) or gatherings at popular meeting points such as the Bellver Castle.
Other places to enjoy an Easter picnic in Mallorca are Son Tries (recommended for families with children), Font de n'Alis (in the public estate of Mondagró) or Son Moragues (in the public estate in Valldemossa), which has public toilets and picnic areas.
Even though the weather at Easter may not be conducive to a swim in the sea, we’ll still be able to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Mediterranean. It’s an ideal time to sunbathe or carry out activities by the sea such as reading, listening to music, or playing sports.
If this doesn’t appeal to you for your trip at Easter in Mallorca, you can choose to discover the History Museum of Manacor or the Museum of Sacred Art of Mallorca, which has some really unique items.
Did you know that Mallorca has more than 20 caves full of natural treasures such as fresh and saltwater lakes and stalactite and stalagmite formations?
One of the most famous is the Cueva del Drach, in Manacor, near Porto Cristo. Its main attractions are its size (it’s made up of four large interconnected caves) and its lake (Llac Martel), which can be crossed by boat and where you can enjoy classical music concerts.
Near Porto Cristo, we can find the famous Cuevas de Hams, named for their stone formations that bear a striking resemblance to fish hooks (“hams” in Mallorcan). Opened to the public in 1910, they have several galleries. In one of them (Cueva Redonda), visitors can visit a botanical garden and have a small snack including a typical local liqueur.
The Cuevas de Génova (with its natural pools and domes) and the Cuevas de Campanet (where fossils of Myotragus balearicus, a prehistoric mammal endemic to the islands of Mallorca and Menorca, were found) are other examples of caves you can visit in Mallorca.
