The triathlete is considered the most complete athlete and with good reason, as they have to master three tough and very varied disciplines: swimming, cycling and running.
To be a good triathlon competitor you must demonstrate special skills in all three: running, cycling and swimming. It requires resistance, great physical shape and perfect technique to transfer from one disciple to another, as quickly as possible. This is known as a transition.
The origins of this tough Olympic sport are believed to be in the US military in the year 1978. It appears that the marines who were destined for the island of Hawaii took part in a trial to decide who was the most complete and resistant athlete in the group. They had no better idea than to invent a test that combined swimming with cycling and running on land.
It’s yet to be confirmed whether or not this story is true or whether it’s just a tale, in any case, it provides a good explanation of the spirit of this sport: to find the most complete athlete, powerful, resistant men and women with excellent technique and who are able to master very different sports.
There are no magic formulas to succeed in a triathlon: it’s all about training hard to gain the necessary resistance and perfect the technique of three very different sports disciplines, searching for perfection in the transitions.
The transition is the time a triathlete takes to transfer from swimming to cycling (T1) and from cycling to running (T2). It’s specifically this aspect of the sport, the time taken to transfer from one trial to the next, which is the be all or end all of many championships.
