A paradise for cyclists: Mallorca

Written by Elisabeth Blue | Feb 27, 2018 11:07:49 AM

The beautiful island of Mallorca is an authentic paradise for cyclists. Were you under the misapprehension that the island only had extravagant parties to offer? I can assure you that you’re wrong.

For many years Mallorca has been making a name for itself as a sports Mecca, thanks in no small part to its magnificent natural landscapes and idyllic routes. If you’re a cyclist, there are excellent reasons to choose the island of the sun as your destination. Keep reading!

1- An ideal climate

Although the weather in Mallorca is ideal all year round, the pleasant Mediterranean climate in spring and autumn is the best time for training. Summer training is not recommended, as the hot midday sun can be draining on a bike.

If you’re a fan of being on two wheels, you’ll be in heaven. The combination of flat terrain in parts of the island, the Tramontana mountains and the rugged coastal areas make Mallorca a paradise. Doesn’t it sound great?

It’s such an idyllic place that not only Spanish visitors are attracted, but tourists from all over the world; from Germany, France, Holland and the UK. All of them are brought to the island by the prospect of a relaxing (or challenging) week of cycling. Wonderful!

2- Excellent routes for cyclists

You’ll be surprised to find roads in such good condition. On the northern and eastern sides of the island there’s very little traffic, and if you fancy you can get away from it all and submerge yourself in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. What a luxury!

Dedicated cycle lanes or marked routes are only found in the island’s bigger cities, but the local people are more than used to seeing cyclists on the roads while driving, so they proceed with plenty of caution.

There are countless routes on minor roads, in rural and inland areas…You’ll get the chance to savour the prettiest villages in Mallorca and sample the beaches, coves and the cliffs that will make you want to do it all over again, guaranteed.

It will be a unique opportunity to travel by bike while enjoying the marvellous natural landscapes offered by the island of the sun. Heading out for a ride will never have been such an enticing prospect.

3- Cycling for all abilities

Whether you’re a professional or amateur cyclist, Mallorca has cycle routes suited to all levels, so you can set yourself a challenge and outdo yourself. If that wasn’t enough, you’ll always be accompanied by the beautiful views of the sea and the mountains.

The afor mentioned Sierra de Tramontana offers gorgeous natural surroundings and mountain passes with varying levels of difficulty that are a joy for cycling enthusiasts. The most enticing routes for cycling lovers are Sa Calobra (Escorca) and the Carretera de Formentor (Puerto Pollensa). Such is their renown among cyclists that they are considered the most popular places in Spain for lovers of life on two wheels. Don’t miss out!

4- Extensive infrastructure

Suppose you’re out having a great time on your bike and you get a puncture. Don’t panic, it’s not a big deal. In the majority of towns and small cities there are bike shops and workshops to help you out if you have a problem with your bike.

And if that wasn’t enough I’ve got some good news for you: recently the government of Mallorca has approved the promotion of even more eco and cycle tourism, as well as investing in the island’s infrastructure. So you can forget about those annoying potholes.

Nothing can get in the way of your plans of cycling Mallorca!

5- Take part in sporting events

Mallorca offers you the chance to participate in a number of sports events, including choosing whether to take on the challenge yourself or simply attending as a spectator.

Events such as the Challenge Ciclista Mallorca and the Mallorca 312 cycling race are Meccas for fans of the sport. Clearly, the presence of Spanish and international stars is guaranteed, but even if you’re an amateur you can sign up.

So what’s involved? The route goes through the majestic Tramontana mountains and the idyllic Playa de Palma, which provide the backdrop for a total of four races per day, each almost 150km long. A truly wonderful challenge! Are you up for it?

6- Hotels for cyclists

You can find cycling hotels that have everything: sports facilities, special catering options, bicycle hire, guided tours and even relaxation areas such as spas and massage centres.

Hotels VIVA offer all the facilities to make sure you enjoy it to the full. Take time to choose which hotel you want to stay in, as it’s always best to pick the one that offers everything you need. That way, you won’t have to worry about a thing, just soak it all up. No stress!
