La grandeza del Imperio Romano reside en su sabiduría. La clave de su éxito fue saber valorar y explotar el potencial del Mediterráneo. Las Baleares, lógicamente, constituyeron (y constituyen a día de hoy) un punto estratégico dentro de todo este entramado.
Esta ciudad romana colocada en una bonita (pero no tranquila en su momento) isla del Mediterráneo, tiene una de las historias más admirables de la Hispania Citerior.
Es muy poco conocida entre las ciudades del viejo imperio. Por eso, nosotros os recomendamos una visita a este tesoro histórico que encontramos en la localidad de Alcúdia.
En el 123 a.C se le encargó a Qvintus Caecilivs Metellvs, Cónsul y General Romano, la ardua tarea de “limpiar” la piratería que abundaba en las costas baleares. Una vez conquistada la isla entró por la bahía de Alcúdia y allí decidió fundar la ciudad de Polléntia (Ciudad del poder).
Sus primeros habitantes fueron 3.000 colonos venidos de la península. Qvintus Caecilivs Metellvs levantó una bella y auténtica ciudad romana, con su foro, edificios públicos, comerciales y religiosos.
A él le debemos también la introducción del vino y del aceite de oliva, llegando a convertir su puertoen el lugar comercial más transitado de la mediterránea occidental.
A Pollentia tampoco le faltó un teatro con aforo para 1500 espectadores. Este teatro se encuentra a sólo 500 metros de la ciudad actual, y conserva sus gradas, la escena, la orquesta…

Its first inhabitants were 3,000 settlers from the mainland. Qvintus Caecilivs Metellvs built a beautiful and authentic Roman city, with its forum, Public Buildings, Religious and Commercial.
We owe him also the Introduction Wine and Olive Oil, converting his dock in the busiest place shopping in the western Mediterranean.
