El 23 de junio es una fecha señalada para los isleños. Es la víspera de San Juan, fiesta que inaugura el verano y en la que las playas se llenan de hogueras y rituales de todos los tipos. Muchos escriben sus deseos y los hacen arder a cuando llega la hora bruja (las 12 de la noche), una fiesta cargada de sentimiento, espiritualidad y cierto esoterismo.
Se celebra en muchos pueblos de las islas, pero nosotros queremos poner el foco en Ciutadella, la capital de la celebración en todas las Baleares.
Es una celebración que dura una semana (aunque los actos centrales se concentran los días 23 y 24 de junio). Si tenéis la suerte de estar en Menorca durante estas fechas es una visita obligada. Se ha convertido en todo un reclamo turístico y recibe cada año más visitantes y llegados de cualquier rincón del mundo.
En Ciutadella más que las hogueras los protagonistas son los caballos, y los ‘caixers’ que los montan. Representan todos los estamentos sociales de antaño (el caixer señor, el caixer cura, los caixers payeses, los menestrales…) son unos auténticos maestros de las acrobacias, tened mucho cuidado pues a menudo hay accidentes porque los asistentes se acercar demasiado a los caballos sin respetar las normas de seguridad.
Los caballos se pasean durante días recorriendo la ciudad protagonizando los famosos ‘caragols’ representaciones que hacen en las plazas mientras suena la banda de música con una canción pegadiza que os llevaréis a casa para siempre.
La fiesta cuenta con muchos actos, el primer toc de fabiol (primer toque de flauta que inaugura la fiesta. El fabioler, montado en un asno con una flauta y un tambor recoge al caixer señor en su casa y a partir de allí empieza el repliegue de los caballeros), la guerra de avellanas, los caragols des Born y de Santa Clara… y los Jocs des Pla, que se celebran el día 24. Os los recomendamos encarecidamente. Los caballeros exhiben todas las acrobacias que son capaces de hacer mientras la gente descarga toda la emoción acumulada durante esta magnífica semana que se revive cada año en Menorca.

June 23 is an indicated a date for the islanders. It is the eve of San Juan, the celebration that opens the summer and where the beaches are filled with bonfires and rituals of all types. Many people write their wishes and make them burn when the witching hour approaches (12 pm). It’s a party full of feeling, spirituality and some esotericism.
It is celebrated in many towns of the islands, but we want to put the focus on Ciutadella, the capital of the Balearic celebration.
It is a celebration that lasts a week (although the main events concentrate on 23 and 24 June). If you are lucky enough to be in Menorca during this time you should go there. It has become a real tourist attraction and each year Menorca receives more visitors coming from every corner of the world.
In Ciutadella more than bonfires protagonists are horses, and 'caixers' the horsemen. They represent all walks of life of yesteryear (the caixer lord, caixer priest, the farmers caixers, artisans ...) they are real masters of acrobatics, but be very careful because there are often accidents because people get too close to the horses without comply with safety standards.
The horses walk for days touring the city starring the famous 'caragols' representations made in squares while the band sounds with a catchy song that you will bring home forever.
If you have chance to see your face in one of the mirrors carrying the horses in the front it will mean that 'next year you’ll return to Sant Joan', but as we said, do it with caution and when horses are stopped.
the party is made up of many events, the first ‘toc de fabiol’ (first touch of flute that opens the festival. The fabioler, riding on a donkey with a flute and a drum picks up the caixer in his own house and from there begins the withdrawal of knights), the war of hazelnuts, caragols des Born and Santa Clara ... and the Jocs des Pla, held the 24 June. We strongly recommend it. Gentlemen exhibit all the stunts they are able to do while people download all the accumulated emotion during this wonderful week is relived each year in Menorca.
