The best food in Mallorca

When we travel for pleasure, we want to stimulate all senses and it’s without a doubt that one of them is taste. The best way of satisfying this is with excellent cuisine. In this sense, the best food in Mallorca will not disappoint, as its offer is not only excellent but also varied and healthy… what more could you ask for?

Much more than just ensaimada or sobrasada

Although it’s without a doubt that the Mallorcan ensaimada (traditional pasty) is a display of virtues and the same can be said about its delicious sobrasada (cured sausage spread), Mallorca food is far more than just these two delicious products.

It’s not a question of demeaning the ensaimada, as it’s no coincidence that it forms a key part of the island’s cuisine. After all, who can resist any of the many combinations which can be made with this dessert?... angel hair, custard, cream, apricot…?

In fact, sobrasada, the cured meat named after its origins, is a treat from the gods, especially when eaten spread on toasted, traditional Mallorcan bread.

However, in this article we want to mention many other dishes, which perhaps as a result of the huge popularity of those mentioned previously, sometimes go unnoticed or are simply, unknown. It’s almost as if they were mere extras in the magnificent performance that is Mallorcan cuisine.

4 delicious traditional Mallorcan dishes

Here is our recognition of a number of exceptional Mallorcan dishes:

  • Mallorcan soups. An original dish to say the least, as despite being soups made with vegetables and brown bread, they are quite solid and can almost be eaten with a fork.
  • Tumbet. A delicious dish made of fried vegetables cut into rounds, topped off with a magnificent blend of sautéed vegetables which completely covers them.
  • Frito Mallorquín. A historic dish in Mallorcan cuisine which dates back to the 14th century. It stands out for its versatility as it can be made with seasonal vegetables, meat or fish.
  • Mallorcan snails. A dish that brings together the essence of Mallorca the most significant marine tradition. This dish combines snails with potatoes and broth with parsley, mint and chilli, among other ingredients. The definitive flavour comes from the aioli (garlic mayonnaise).
  • Arròs brut (‘dirty rice’). An excellent dish which can be eaten both as a main dish or a side, to accompany meat, for example. It’s called ‘dirty rice’ because of the colour of the broth while it simmers.

It’s easy to enjoy Mallorca food as there is a wide range of restaurants of all types and categories, all of which can be found across the island.
