Discover Banyalbufar, the little-known corner of Mallorca

The Sierra de Tramuntana, an extraordinary natural landscape that runs like a backbone through the north of Mallorca, is crammed with surprises and breath-taking places awaiting to be discovered, so many that one can never know them all. One of these little gems is Banyalbufar, a rural place that is small but has plenty to see. Located on the coast and with the imposing sierra providing an unbeatable backdrop, Banyalbufar encapsulates all the best places of Mallorca: nature in its purest form, peaceful coves, magnificent mountains and a rich historical and cultural heritage.

What can we see in Banyalbufar?

The very name of the village embodies the living history of the Balearic Islands, because Banyalbufar originates from a combination of Arabic and Catalan with a highly significant meaning: “embedded in the sea”.  The area was inhabited and cultivated in the 10th century by the Arabs, who built a sophisticated system of irrigation channels still in use to this day and well worth exploring.

Even the village streets, with their attractive sinuous shapes, are a sight to behold. And the coves, notable among which are Cala Banyalbufar, Es Corral Fals and Son Bunyola, are synonymous with cleanliness, beauty, tranquillity and relaxation.

The historic centre the village is simply enchanting, the highlight being the Torre de Ses Ánimes, which was built by the inhabitants in the 12th century to protect themselves from pirate attacks.

The village shops are also of considerable interest, with local craft and culinary products being well worth discovering. Especially recommended is a visit to one of the local bodegas, famous for the indigenous variety of grape known as Malvasía.

Nor should the surrounding area be overlooked: this includes the nearby municipality of Estellencs, a paradise for walkers and cyclists, and the fishing port of Es Port des Canonge. Following the coast road one arrives as such well-known towns as Andratx and Sóller.
