Carnival is the festival of colour, fun, parades and bands. And that means one thing for groups and families: guaranteed fun! But around this time each year we have that big question to answer: what are we going to dress up as?

10 carnival costume ideas

  1. Vecina Rubia (Blonde Neighbour)

This is currently one of the most popular characters on Spanish social networks. To make her costume, all you need is a yellow jacket similar to the Zara original, a blonde wig and a print-out of the famous Barbie photo that Vecina Rubia usually holds in front of her face. You can use a rubber band to turn the photo into a mask so that you don't have to carry it in your hand the whole time.

  1. LEGO costume

Dressing up as one of our favourite childhood toys is a sure-fire winner. To make the LEGO piece all you need is cardboard, paint and some creativity to give shape to the costume based on cardboard shapes. It's also a great idea to dress up as a group, as each of you can go as a pieced of Lego. In short, a guaranteed triumph!

  1. John Lennon and Yoko Ono costume

Ideal for people who love music - especially the Beatles. All you need is round sunglasses for John and a white sun-hat like the one Yoko wore. Don't forget to wear white and promote peace. You'll be quite the fashion couple!

  1. Ensaimada pastry

Ensaimada is a classic Mallorcan pastry. To make the costume all you have to do is make the ensaimada pastry out of brown paper. Add strings at both ends of the pastry to use as braces. To finish it off, you can also make another smaller one for your head and wear it like a hat. Or you could put an empty Mallorcan ensaimada box on your head.

  1. Classical story characters

Little Red Riding Hood, Peter Pan, the Wizard of Oz... these costumes are great for flexibility, as they can be used both for dressing up individually and for groups. For example, the girl of the family can go as Little Red Riding Hood, her brother can be the wolf, the mother can go as the grandmother and the father can go as the woodcutter.

  1. The cave dwellers

A cool costume that you can make yourselves with colourful animal prints, such as leopards and zebras. To make it more realistic, mess up your hair and paint your face to look like it is covered in earth or mud.

  1. Where's Wally?

This is another costume that is spot-on for families and groups and requires very few materials to make: red and white striped t-shirts, jeans, black thick-rimmed spectacles and not much else.

  1. The Incredibles

The superhero characters are always a lot of fun and eye-catching. With just tights, a red long-sleeved t-shirt, black cycling shorts, gloves and a mask and a few more details, it's easy to disguise yourself as the fun superhero family.

  1. Rosalia

Another great costume idea, as it is very simple to put together. A sweatshirt pulled up with your navel showing, lip-gloss and a few gold rings is more than enough to improvise a costume that is totally contemporary and original.  If you like, you can also add musical accessories - a microphone, for example.

  1. Space family

Our last suggestion is a modern family costume, based around science fiction, which is always a fun and stimulating theme. You can make these costumes yourself by painting clothes with silver spray or covering them with silver ribbon.
