Can Picafort belongs to the town of Santa Margalida; it is on very flat land, broken up by streams, and with some low hills.
This area is based on agriculture. The most famous character from this town is Don Joan March i Ordinas, known as the last pirate of the Mediterranean; he became the sixth wealthiest man in the world according to Forbes Magazine.
Outside the urban zone, there are areas which still remain unspoilt, and after a brief stroll it is possible to swim alone even during the high season. Further south there is a second holiday area, Son Serra de Marina, which surprinsingly enough has no hotels; most of its inhabitants are local.
