MENORCA - CIUTADELLA

Beaches and Nature

The municipality of Ciutadella, the one of greater extensión of the island is plenty full of coves. There are great differences between beaches of the north and those of the south or either west.
In those of the north the surroundings are rockier and have less high vegetation, the sand is darker and this fact causes the water to darken. In those of the south or west, the vegetation is abundant and higher, the soil is less rocky and the sand is fine and white, thus the waters are of tourqouise colour and transparent.
The northern half of Minorca tend to be very exposed to strong winds while the south and the west use to have still and warmer waters.
The whole of the nature of the virgin coves is worthy to visit. The best way to visit them is on foot or on a bycicle since the access roads are rural paths often very narrow and without asphalt in many sections.

Cala’n Blanes
Cala’n Blanes is a cove very sheltered from the sea and accessible by road from Ciutadella either by the seaside road (la farola) or the inner road, the latter recently arranged and with wider lanes.

Cales Piques
This inlet is formed by two narrow and colorful coves of high riscos and deep waters running into small beaches of bulky sand. lt is acceded through a precipice which is very interesting for its special configuration. It is near 3.5 km distance from Ciutadella going by the road of Cala’n Blanes passing across the neighboring urbanization of “Los Delfines”.

Cala’n Forcat
This facing south cove of small dimensions is formed by precious even smaller coves of rocky soil with a little sand on the sea bed. It is 3 kms. distance from Ciutadella using the inner road of Cala´n Blanes.

Cala en Brut
The cove mouth is rather opened to the sea but the small coves around give shelter to both boats and bathers. It is also accessible from Ciutadella through Cala’n Blanes road.

Sa caleta d’en Gorries
Small cove of the western coast near Ciutadella. It has a circular floor turret that dominates the entrance, it is also known as "Es Castellar". Surrounded by a small dry stone wall, this tower is one of the few British vestiges preserved in the area of Ciutadella. It was built during the last British domination in 1799.

Santandria
Very close to Ciutadella we find this small cove of the western coast. In the surrounding area we can find prehistoric caves formerly occupied by the Romans. Very quiet and little urbanized, it preserves its own relaxing charm.

Cala Blanca
Small and pretty cove located in the bay of Ciutadella, its long extension prevents it from the strong surge. The beach owes its name to the beatiful shade of the sand and the clearness of the water. We recommend to visit "S'aigo dolça", a sandy corner located on the right of the cove which is approachable following a way that goes along the seashore.

La Vall d’ Algaiarens
Very well preserved isolated virgin beach of fine golden sand, surrounded by mounts all covered with pinetrees and scrubs approaching to the very coastline. It is remote from any town and it does not provide any kind of service to the bathers.

Son Saura
It is almost a small virgin bay sheltered enough thanks to its semicircular shape. It is formed by two splendid white sand beaches separated by a small projection covered with pinetrees.

Es talaier
Eastwards Son Saura’s beach we can find this small virgin cove wide opened to southeast and subdivided into two little coves of light beige sand and transparent waters. There is a beatiful pinewood behind this cove.

Macarella y macarelleta
These two side by side coves are on the southwestern corner of the island. Macarelleta can only be acceded through Macarella by a tiny path that follows the seafront all the tine. Both coves have white and fine sand with real clear waters. Near Macarella a water spring flows all the year with fresh and drinking-water. There are many man-made caves in the cliffs of both coves and on the top of the headland there is a coastal megalithic redoubt; it is an open air settlement isolated in a very rocky area.

Cala Morell
Cala Morell is a cove well sheltered form the northern winds by the rocky surroundings and even more by a kind of sea branch that encloses the cove. The beach is small, clean and quiet. The western side is used for small boats to tie up.It is northwards from Ciutadella.
