March festivities

The “Easter Sunday’s”.

Easter celebrations start on the “Ramos Sunday”, commemorating Jesus entrance to Jerusalem. It is typical to bring olive’s branches and palm tree leaves in order to prevent the evil. During the “Easter Thursday” some processions in all the villages of Majorca are celebrated. With their traditional walking that presents Jesus martyrdom scenes accompanied with hundreds of penitents. Palma’s procession is a very spectacular one because of the great number of participants. During the “Easter Friday” the processions are repeated with the same steps and penitents. In this day the descent of Jesus to the Cross is emphasized. The most relevant processions are in Artà (Sant Salvador), Pollença (Calvari), Felanitx (Sant Miquel church) and in Palma.

The “Easter Sunday’s” celebration is based on the reunion of Jesus’ procession, after his resurrection with the Virgin Mary. Finally, the Monday of Easter the vast majority of the villages celebrate their pilgrimage. A celebration that consists of going to hermitages and sanctuaries located in the hills of Majorca and they spend the whole day there.
